Course Description

Category Credits: 1 Product Knowledge Credit for FP Canada + 1 Professional Development Credit for MFDA

Fixed income Products include bonds, T-Bills, money market, preferred shares, strip bonds, and other such types of products which pay a fixed return. The basic concepts of the regular bond are described with reference to coupon, trust deed, and yield concepts. The different features of bonds are described such as the pricing, duration, volatility, yield, term to maturity, and liquidity are described. Various types of bonds such as convertible, retractable, extendable, and features such as sinking fund are elaborated. Government of Canada and corporate bond types are reviewed. The calculations for current yield and yield to maturity formulas are covered with examples for clarity. 

The second part of the course covers the concepts of stocks and shares. Common and preferred shares are elaborated. Dividend features are listed. Stock splits and consolidation are illustrated with examples. Preferred shares features and types are covered. The stock indexes and averages are contrasted. Equity transactions of long and short as well as types of equity transactions are elaborated with examples.


Students must pass the final exam before a certificate will be issued.
