Financial planning professionals are not licensed to provide tax advice. They must refer clients to accountants or other tax professionals. However, when dealing with investment advice, the IIROC approved person must understand which type of account to open and the implications regarding taxes. If clients withdraw money from an RRSP, TFSA, RESP, or other accounts, they should be able to address the questions the client may have about taxes.
This course explains the tax system of Canada. The method of calculating income tax is described. Various types of income calculations are calculated. The taxation of investment income is provided, with reference to interest, capital gain, and dividends. Carrying charges, borrowed funds, superficial losses, and calculation of adjusted cost basis is provided. RRSP, Spousal RRSP, RRIF, Income splitting, RESP, TFSA, and brokerage accounts are elaborated.
Students must pass the final exam before a certificate will be issued.
