Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is RIBO Level 1?

Registered Insurance Brokers of Ontario (RIBO) 1 is the entry-level RIBO license. This is the first license you get if you want to become an insurance broker in Ontario.

  • How hard is the RIBO exam?

The exam is all multiple choice and designed to be manageable by anyone. You certainly don't need a college/university education to pass it! The key will be in how you prepare. PNC Learning's RIBO 1 course teaches you everything you need to know to pass the exam in plain language, we provide you extensive tutor support and offer a pass guarantee to ensure we are with you every step of the way.

  • How long is the RIBO Level 1 exam?

The RIBO Level 1 exam is 3 hours long and consists of 100 multiple-choice questions. It's administered through IBAO or the Insurance Institute of Ontario, either in-person at a testing centre or online via remote proctoring from home. Most candidates find the time limit manageable with proper preparation.

  • Is the RIBO exam tough?

The RIBO Level 1 exam is challenging for beginners, but very passable with the right study materials. The difficulty comes less from the questions themselves and more from the volume of content: policies, coverages, and Ontario-specific regulations. Candidates who use plain-language study notes and practice questions closely modelled on the real exam consistently pass on their first attempt.

  • How much does it cost to get your RIBO license in Ontario?

There are 3 fees involved in getting your RIBO license: Course Fees, Exam Fees, and Application Fees. Course Fees: $249 with PNC Learning's RIBO 1 course Exam Fees: $300 RIBO License Application Fees: $220

  • What is the difference between level 1 and level 2 RIBO?

The main difference between the two is the level of supervision you are subject to. As a Level 1 broker, you must work from the office (WFH has changed that) or otherwise be supervised heavily. A RIBO Level 2 broker is able to work more independently meeting clients in their home, office, etc. to transact insurance business. A Level 2 broker is also able to work as an independent producer owning and building their own book of business they can later sell (usually for 2-2.5x commission revenue.

  • What is the difference between RIBO license and LLQP license?

The RIBO license is what you get in Ontario if you want to become a general insurance broker. Whereas the LLQP license is what you get if you want to become a life/health insurance broker. A general insurance broker can deal with things like home, business, vehicle, travel insurance, etc. A life/health insurance broker deals with insurance products like life insurance, health insurance, group benefits, segregated funds, etc.

  • What is the difference between OTL and RIBO license?

The RIBO license is for students that want to become insurance brokers. Insurance brokers are more independent and represent various insurance companies offering their clients the best choice from a wide variety of products and insurers. The OTL license is for students that want to become insurance agents. Insurance agents represent 1 insurance company and offer products from 1 insurer. If you are not sure what to get, a RIBO license typically opens up more career opportunities and you can easily convert to an OTL license with just some paperwork. If you have an OTL license, you need to write an RIBO Equivalency exam to become a RIBO broker. Unless you have a specific job opening in mind that requires an OTL license, I recommend getting a RIBO license.

  • How to get a RIBO license?

To get a RIBO license, you need to take a RIBO 1 exam prep course, pass the RIBO 1 exam and then apply for a license with RIBO.

  • How much is a RIBO license?

Getting your RIBO license involves 3 fees:
Course fee: $249 (PNC Learning RIBO Level 1 course)
Exam fee: $325 (paid to your exam administrator)
License fee: $240 (paid to RIBO)

  • What does RIBO mean?

RIBO stands for Registered Insurance Brokers of Ontario. They are the self-governing regulatory body for general insurance brokers in Ontario.

  • How long does it take to prepare for the RIBO Level 1 exam?

Everyone is different, but with the PNC Learning RIBO 1 exam prep course, it takes about 60-80 hours of total study time or about 3-4 weeks if you study part-time.

However, you have access to the program for 8 months, so there is plenty of time. If you need support at any time during your studies, you can leverage our AI tutor (for select courses) or reach out to our human tutor team for assistance. Whatever your goals are, we are here to help you succeed.

  • What is the scope of practice with a RIBO license?

A RIBO license lets you represent multiple insurers and sell general insurance in Ontario. This means you can sell home, auto, tenant, business insurance, and travel insurance. Basically everything except specialized life and health insurance products.

  • Is the RIBO Level 1 license mandatory for all insurance brokers in Ontario?

Yes. If you want to be an insurance broker in Ontario, you need to hold a RIBO 1 license to start. From there, you can upgrade to a RIBO 2 or even RIBO 3 license.

  • What is the difference between RIBO and other insurance licenses?

Within Ontario, RIBO is differentiated from other licenses like OTL because you can represent multiple insurers as a broker. Outside of Ontario, RIBO is the same as any other insurance broker/agent license. RIBO is different from LLQP in that RIBO allows the sale of general insurance, whereas LLQP is for specialized life and health insurance products.

  • Can I work part-time or freelance with a RIBO license?

Yes, you can. Many job formats are available for RIBO licensees, including part-time , work-from-home (WFH), or even independent contractor work where you earn commissions and build your own book of business.

  • Are there any work experience requirements for this license?

There is no work experience requirement to hold a RIBO 1 license. Anyone who passes the exam and meets the licensing criteria (ie. passing a background check) can get this license.
